The primary purpose of the Denis Browne Tissue Spreader involves treating conditions such as congenital clubfoot (also known as talipes equinovarus), which presents as a foot deformity from birth. Surgeons utilise this instrument during procedures to correct the deformity and restore the foot to its normal anatomical position.
Clinicians typically employ the Denis Browne Tissue Spreader in clubfoot surgery. During this surgical intervention, they release taut ligaments and tendons to facilitate the proper realignment of the foot. The tissue spreader assists in gently parting and expanding the soft tissues surrounding the foot. This is done to create improved access to the ligaments and tendons requiring release.
In certain instances, medical professionals perform a procedure called tenotomy. This entails cutting the tight Achilles tendon to enhance foot positioning. The tissue spreader can aid in holding the tissues apart during this procedure. The tissue spreader can be used to gently manipulate the foot joints, enabling the surgeon to guide the foot into the desired corrected position.
After correcting, the surgeon uses the tissue spreader for precise placement of pins, screws, or fixation devices, maintaining foot position.
It’s important to note that the Denis Browne Tissue Spreader is just one tool among many that surgeons may use during clubfoot correction surgery. The specific surgical approach and techniques can vary based on the severity of the deformity and the surgeon’s preferences.
